It’s Time to Clear the Air: The Tobacco Cessation Center at Arnot Health is Serving Communities Most in Need

Here are the fast facts: smoking rates among people who are poor, less educated and have mental health issues have not changed, according to the New York State Department of Health 2010 statistics, even though tobacco use among adults and teens in New York state is down to an all-time low.

Time to Reach Out and Help Clean the Air
The Tobacco Cessation Center at Arnot Health (TCC) has refocused its mission and adopted a new work plan to implement and maintain practices within federally funded community health centers that serve lower socioeconomic populations.
The goal at every clinic – have providers always asks patients about their tobacco use, advise them that it is an unhealthy behavior, access their willingness to quit, provide counseling and prescriptions to assist them in quitting, and arrange for follow-up.
To do this, The TCC has reached out to Personalized Recovery Oriented Services (PROS) programs that serve the population with mental health disorders and to Healthcare Provider Organizations (HPOs) that serve the more rural and lower socioeconomic populations to create and incorporate a formal tobacco use dependence treatment policy and assist with staff trainings to encourage system level changes.
Serving Our Own, The Health of Our Community
The Cancer Burden in New York State, the 2012 American Cancer Society (ACS) report, shows that men in Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben counties have among the highest rates of lung cancer, exceeding the state average. Women living in Schuyler County have one of the highest rates of colorectal cancer.
The ACS report also recommends increased funding for the New York State Department of Health’s Tobacco Control Program, which provides funding for the Tobacco Cessation Center at Arnot Health.
“These findings highlight the continued need for prevention and cessation of tobacco use, especially in the communities served by ArnotHealth,” explains Martha Donovan, RN, BSN, program coordinator at TCC. “We need to address this growing disparity and the negative impact it has on the health of our community.”
Our Services

Arnot Health and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine Walk Hand-in-Hand

25,000 reasons to celebrate – Arnot Health is transforming the system to an academic healthcare environment and received a major gift of $25,000 from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) to the Arnot Ogden Medical Center Foundation, helping support the transition.

Making Us Stronger
Arnot Health is the newest teaching site for medical students, residents and fellows from the nation’s largest medical college. This program is expected to help the system recruit and retain providers to the area.

“Having students, and later, residents and fellows, in our facilities will make us stronger, enhancing the patient experience and helping our organization maintain its position as a leader in the provision of quality healthcare in our region,” said Anthony J. Cooper, FACHE, CEO, Arnot Health.

Transformation of Care
Through this partnership, Arnot Health will become one of the largest osteopathic regional clinical training sites in the northeast United States.

How will this make students into the best doctors they can be? By combining quality, specialty healthcare in a community setting with hands-on training and direct mentorship from our highly skilled and experienced providers at Arnot Health facilities.

As the training students become a part of the community, working in our facilities and our offices, we will be better positioned to retain providers in our area. Which really means Arnot Health will continue to transform the care we deliver to you and your family, with the next generation of physicians.
